SEO in its Simplest Form

We optimize our page for search engines because search engines help discover websites. Search engines are what people use when asking questions, seeking advice, looking for tips, etc. In fact, a study in Outbrain shows that search most popular way to drive traffic to your site beating social media by 300 percent.

SEO is though of as a complicated technique that only professionals can perform; however, with today's search engines, if you have a knowledge in basic HTML, a computer literate, and you have a common sense, optimizing a page for search engines is a breeze.

What complicates SEO is the so-called algorithms. Most SEO try to master search engine algorithms but the truth is, algorithms are just a waste of time.

If optimizing a page is easy and algorithms are a waste of time, how can you do SEO in its simplest form?

Here's my checklist to help you get started.

Understand Search Engines
How do search engines visit a site? Why are some sites on the top page results and other are at the bottom? What is the anatomy of a search result? These are just some of the questions that you have to understand before you can optimize a site.

Google has a great beginner's guide to help you understand that.

Research

Try to keep up with the basics of SEO first, so you'll understand its concept. You may hear someone saying to do a kind of technique that can help with your site, but before you do that, look it up first to see if its true.
A great source for learning SEO is Google's webmaster central blog, Google webmaster forum, and Help center.

Asking for feedback from the webmaster community will also help with your research.

Sign up for Webmaster Tools

You have two webmaster tools at your disposal, Bing and Google webmaster tools. Once you've signed up, these tools will give you tips and advice on what you can do to optimize your site like your page structure, keywords used, who's linking to your site, page speed, etc. This tool has all the features you'll need to understand how to optimize your site.

The key to understanding SEO is to understand its concept. Don't fall for any blackhat SEO techniques nor try to understand search engine algorithms because it will only make your website worst. These three checklists I've shared have more than enough resources to get you started in optimizing your website.
